How many porta potties do you need for an event?
For an event, multiply guests by hours, divide by 200 and round up: 100 guests for 4 hours need 2 porta potties, and 150 guests for 5 hours need 4. Add 1 unit for every 4 when alcohol is served, so the 150-guest event with a bar needs 5. Public events add at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit.
What the calculator assumes
- One standard unit serves about 200 guest-hours before lines and tank level become a problem.
- Alcohol raises restroom trips, so we add 1 unit for every 4 (rounded up).
- Public events: 5% of units accessible, at least 1, per the 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2.
- Food served: 1 hand-wash station for every 5 units, at least 1.
This is Carl Rental Works’ planning method from our own event setups, not a legal standard. Your venue or permit office may require more.
How many porta potties for 50, 100, 200 or 500 guests?
For a 4-hour event, 50 guests need 1 porta potty, 100 guests need 2, 200 guests need 4 and 500 guests need 10. Longer events need more: 200 guests for 8 hours need 8 units. The table covers 25 to 500 guests and 2 to 10 hours, before the alcohol add-on.
| Guests | 2 hrs | 4 hrs | 6 hrs | 8 hrs | 10 hrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| 50 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 3 |
| 75 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 4 |
| 100 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| 150 | 2 | 3 | 5 | 6 | 8 |
| 200 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 10 |
| 300 | 3 | 6 | 9 | 12 | 15 |
| 500 | 5 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 25 |
How do you add units when alcohol is served?
When alcohol is served, take the unit count from the table and add 1 unit for every 4, rounding up. A table count of 4 becomes 5. A count of 8 becomes 10. A count of 2 becomes 3. Guests at events with a bar use the restroom more often, and the extra unit keeps lines under 5 minutes.
| Table count | Add | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | +1 | 2–5 |
| 5–8 | +2 | 7–10 |
| 9–12 | +3 | 12–15 |
How many porta potties does a construction crew need?
A construction crew of 20 or fewer workers needs at least 1 toilet under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51, Table D-1. Crews of 21 to 199 need 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. We recommend 1 standard unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week with weekly service, so a 15-person crew gets 2 units.
Do farms and ranches follow a different rule?
Farms follow OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110 for hand-labor field work: 1 toilet and 1 hand-washing facility for every 20 employees, within a quarter-mile walk of each worker. Fields wider than a quarter mile need units spread out, not grouped at the barn.
