Porta Potties in Texas Summer Heat
Heat speeds up odor. Placement and service frequency fix most of it.
Why do porta potties smell worse in summer?
Porta potties smell worse in summer because heat speeds up the breakdown of waste and evaporates the deodorizer faster. In Temple, July and August highs reach the upper 90s, and a dark unit in full sun gets much hotter inside. The fix is more frequent service, shade and venting.
How often should a porta potty be serviced in summer?
In summer, a job-site porta potty used by more than 10 workers should be serviced twice a week instead of once. Units used by 10 or fewer can stay on weekly service if they sit in shade. Event units for all-day summer events benefit from a mid-day service.
| Use | Summer service |
|---|---|
| 1–10 workers, shaded | Weekly |
| 11–20 workers | Twice weekly |
| All-day event, 200+ guests | Mid-day service |
Where should a porta potty go in hot weather?
In hot weather, a porta potty should go in open shade on the north or east side of a building, with the door facing away from the afternoon sun and the roof vent clear. Translucent-roof units stay brighter but not cooler, so shade matters more than color.
What else helps crews in the heat?
A hand-wash station helps crews cool off and clean up before eating, and it cuts down on sanitizer complaints in July. Keep drinking water separate from the hand-wash station. Report a full or smelly unit to dispatch the same day so an extra service can be sent.

Quick answers: porta potties in texas summer heat
Do blue porta potties get hotter than gray ones?
Darker colors absorb more sun, but placement and shade matter far more than color. A gray unit in full sun still gets hot.
Can you add an extra service just for one hot week?
Extra visits can be added for a single week at $45 per unit per visit. Call or text dispatch.
